We went to the Earth Fair in Barcelona today.
On the programme they suggested arriving in a green manner – by bike, on foot or in a train.
So we walked to Canovelles station (I didn’t know it existed before today!) and Duna took her first journey by train
We got off at Arc de Triomf which is right beside the entrance to Ciutadella Parc – a place that is full of tango memories for me. There is a bandstand there called La Glorietta where you can dance for free every Saturday in the fresh evening air. But the park has a darker history as a whole neighbourhood was destroyed after the 1714 defeat of Barcelona by the Spanish King Phillip V. He built a large fortress to house the invading army – a star shaped citadel or ciutadella. This was demolished after 1869 when General Joan Prim (famous street name in Granollers!) handed it back to the city. They started to create the park in 1872 and now old arsenal of the citadel houses the Catalan Parliament.
Duna took it all in her stride – the people, the traffic, the other dogs. But her favourite bit was the long row of food stalls.
The Middle Eastern Tea tent offered Mint tea, a bit of shade and some peace from the crowds
and a little bowl filled with biscuits
Then the train home and by now it was familiar so no wild eyed staring at every station.
Home and dinner and sleep. Not really a city dog she would have preferred taking the train in the other direction to Vic and the mountains and maybe that will be the next trip.
We haven’t taken Chuck on the train yet, not into or out of town. Food for thought! I’m not sure he’d handle it with much dignity though.
Great photos! And you must take Duna by train to Vic and the mountains, and post photos of that trip too.
Some times I feel speaking to a wall, I said several times about the existence of this other station in Granollers-Canovelles, wasn’t I? I’m a perfeccionist, you know, not a perfect being, but Glorietta in català we write like this: Glorieta! Jajaja! xxxx
She looks a lovely dog, and I’m glad she took it all in her stride.
My favourite photo above is the one of Duna looking longingly at the biscuits in the Tea tent. Her eyes say it all. Of course she ate some too!
Sorry Pep – I don’t always take in all the information – not because of my wall like tendencies – more of a net/xarça really and some bits stay there while others escape through the holes!
If Chuck is anything like Blue and Bonnie then perhaps he wouldn’t take to the train – collies are not really happy in enclosed spaces I think. but perhaps worth giving it a try? With mine they took the boat trip to the Isles of Scilly several times and were so happy to arrive somewhere beautiful with all the empty beaches. They did wear muzzles to make sure no childrens hands were chewed off in excitement.
and yes – the train to Vic I’m sure will happen one day. It goes all the way to La Molina the skiing resort. KX
Oh my goodness, the look on Duna’s face in this last photo, is soooo much like my own Luna’s – when she would be staring down a last morsel from the table. EVen though she may have been happier going in the opposite direction, I think it’s amazing that they even let dogs on trains without being stuck in a restrictive carrier. Hurray for the European love of the dog! (speaking as a dog lover myself, naturally). And I agree with you about vegetarian fare at restaurants. I feel so much better when I eat vegetarian but I live with a carnivore and since he does so much of the cooking it is hard to divorce myself from that one thing that we do share – eating meals together. Ah, relationships – the good, the bad and the ugly! (In this case the ugly is my waist line.)
